Only an estuary airport will do..

Widespread talk today - not least from British businesses - about the need for new runway capacity in the southeast. No doubt they are right.

But it remains a no-brainer that a third runway at Heathrow would quickly reach capacity and with it breaches of already tight environmental standards designed to protect one of the largest concentrations of population in the London area.

If we are to compete internationally, Britain will need far greater capacity, along with integrated transport structures quite beyond Heathrow. We need a new, future-proof estuary airport fully integrated with motorway, high speed rail & shipping routes across Europe.

The Coalition needs to initiate this quickly, ensuring construction kick starts the London economy, replacing HS2 in the process..
