Once ratified, a referendum on Lisbon would be ridiculous. Cameron should instead offer the British electorate a referendum that finally settles the European issue. It’s all about sovereignty - based on what direction the European Union should go. The British people should be offered three alternatives:
- Britain should continue its membership of the European Union as a co-operative and trading organisation without losing any further British sovereignty to the EU.
- Britain should continue its membership of the European Union accepting deeper integration towards a European federal state and the consequent further loss of British sovereignty to the EU.
- Britain should withdraw from the European Union.
